The DA has condemned the alleged attempted murder of outgoing Eskom CEO, Andre de Ruyter.
The official opposition said De Ruyter had opened a case of attempted murder after he injested cyanide, that was allegedly put in his morning coffee.
Cyanide is a rapidly acting, potentially deadly chemical.
It’s believed the incident happened soon after De Ruyter announced his resignation as Eskom CEO in mid-December.
DA MP Ghaleb Cachalia called on president Cyril Ramaphosa to outline to the nation exactly what is being done to address the situation.
Cachalia said the DA would write to the President to demand action without delay.
“He needs to do so immediately and must be held to account for every act of omission or commission that has brought us to this sorry state of affairs,” Cachalia said.
“Not only has de Ruyter been left out to dry amidst ANC shenanigans but now criminal syndicates within Eskom are palpably hell-bent on cementing their stranglehold on Eskom that is destroying the economy.
It is clear that they will stop at nothing,” he added.
Eskom's head of Security, Karen Pillay said: "Eskom cannot comment further on the poisoning incident involving the Group Chief Executive, which occurred during December 2022, as the matter is subject to police investigation."
