CT cop and friend shot dead in Mfuleni attack

A Cape Town cop who graduated from the police academy last December was shot dead in Mfuleni.

Western Cape police said reports indicated that 25-year-old Constable Thobinceba Xhontelo had just stopped the vehicle he was driving when he realised that another car had been following him.

Spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said that the occupants opened fire, killing the policeman.

He said the gunmen then proceeded to open fire on the other occupants of the car, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man.

A 32-year-old woman was shot in the leg and admitted to a hospital.

"Detectives from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) were investigating," Potelwa said.

Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of Xhontelo who was stationed at Kuilsriver SAPS.
