The Ministry of Police released the annual crime stats for the financial year of 2019/2020 on Friday.
The murder rate in the country increased by 1.4% in the last financial year with a total of 21 325 people murdered in the country whilst 18 635 attempted murders were recorded.
In the last financial year, 49 people were killed on farms in South Africa which is an increase of two from the previous year's 47. Most of the farm murders were recorded in the Free State and the Eastern Cape.
Other stats include:
Sexual offences: 53 293 (total)
Rape: 42 289
Sexual Assault: 7 749
Attempted sexual offences: 2 076
Contact Sexual offences: 1 179
Assault with the attempt to do grievous bodily harm is 166 720
The Province with the highest murder rate was Kwazulu Natal, followed by Gauteng.
Police Minister Bheki Cele says their stats have shown improvement but that it was nowhere near where they wanted to be.
