Annual consumer price inflation was 3.2% in January, up from 3.0% in December 2024.

Statistics South Africa said month-on-month, CPI increased by 0.3%.

According to Stats SA on Wednesday, the main contributors to the 3.2% annual inflation rate were housing and utilities, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and restaurants and accommodation services.

Inflation slowed for meat, fruits and nuts, sugar, confectionery and desserts, fish and other seafood as well as milk, other dairy products and eggs.

Higher inflation rates were also recorded for cereal products, hot beverages, cold beverages, oils and fats as well as vegetables.

Stats SA said meat prices were on average 0.5% lower in January 2025 compared with January 2024, the third month that the CPI for meat has been in deflation.

“Prices for cereal products increased by an annual 3.8% from 3.7% in December. Maize meal prices rose by 4,8% between December and January, taking the annual rate to 10.1%.

“The annual increase for samp was 15,4%. In contrast, prices dropped for both white (-0.7%) and brown (-0.5%) bread. The annual increase for white bread was 1.9% and for brown bread 1.0%.

Stats SA said inflation for hot beverages remains “sticky at high levels”, while the annual inflation rate for instant coffee, which entered double-digit territory in March 2022, was 17.2%, the highest of all food products.

The Eastern Cape recorded an inflation rate of 3.4% year-on-year in December.
