COVID19-SA: New regulations implemented as of immediately


New regulations for dealing with the COVID-19 disaster were published on Wednesday night.

These include a ban on alcohol sales after 6 pm, penalties for spreading fake news about the disease, and barring on big price increases for goods.

The Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma also gave other ministers sweeping powers to take action to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

Pretending to have the virus when you don't could also result in jail time and intentionally exposing someone to infection can be prosecuted as an assault attempted murder or murder.

The new rules came into effect immediately.

Some of the points to highlight are the following:

  • All visits to Correctional facilities, including holding cells will be suspended until the 19th of April.
  • All on-consumption premises selling liquor, including taverns, restaurants and clubs, must be closed with immediate effect or must accommodate no more than 50 persons at any time: Provided that adequate space is available and that all directions in respect of hygienic conditions and limitation of exposure to persons with Covid-19 are adhered to.
  • Shops selling alcohol must close at 6 pm, on weekdays and 1 pm on Sunday's.
  • People who spread fake news with the intention to deceive another person about the Covid-19 commits an offence and will be prosecuted.
