President Jacob Zuma’s application for leave to appeal the decision by the North Gauteng High Court to supply his record of decision for his recent midnight cabinet reshuffle has been postponed to later this week.
The matter, which was brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to compel Zuma to provide reasons for his reshuffle, especially the firing of former finance minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, was supposed to be heard on Monday in Pretoria.
DA MP and federal executive chairperson, James Selfe, confirmed that the matter would not be heard on Monday.
“The case concerns President Zuma’s application for leave to appeal against an order of the Gauteng North High Court that he must give reasons and the record of decision as to why he dropped Pravin Gordhan from the Cabinet,” Selfe said.
“That case was to have been heard today, but owing to a bereavement of one of the advocates it has now been postponed until Thursday or Friday.”
Last month, on April 5, the DA filed an urgent application with the North Gauteng High court to request that Zuma’s decision to remove Gordhan and Jonas be set aside on the grounds that it was irrational, and therefore unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid.
High court judge Bashier Vally earlier this month then ordered Zuma to dispatch records‚ correspondence‚ memorandums or any reports – including the so-called Intelligence report – related to the cabinet reshuffle within five days.
