Cosatu wants world cup stadium turned into low cost housing

Cosatu in the Western Cape says the world cup stadium should be turned into low-cost housing for the people of Cape Town before it is dismantled.

The trade union federation in the Western Cape says it has had discussions with engineers and architects who feel that this is possible.

Cosatu's Tony Ehrenreich says if the City of Cape Town is to spend public funds on the stadium then it should be spent in a way that benefits the most vulnerable people.

He also says that the building of low cost housing in Cape Town central will go a long way to integrate communities across colour lines.

The community of Green Point, who do not want further commercial activities in the stadium, should support the plans to promote the building of affordable housing in the city centre.

"This represents an important opportunity to integrate black and white communities, which we should not miss out on. The City has not been promoting black and white communities across the class divide, and here is an important opportunity" Ehrenreich said.
