The Tobacco Institute of South Africa says the draft regulations on smoking in public places and certain outdoor public places are too restrictive.
The Institute says it had submitted comments to the department of health highlighting certain concerns when the Tobacco Products Control Act of 1993 was passed into law.
Tisa CEO, Francois van der Merwe, says the Act made provisions for smoking indoors but the new draft regulations prohibits this which he says is not in line with the spirit and purpose of the Act.
He says banning indoor smoking areas would effectively make it illegal to have vending machines selling tobacco products.
