Corrupt cops hamper fight against crime

The Police Ministry has admitted that corrupt police officials are stalling their fight against crime.

Spokesperson, Zweli Mnisi made the comment following reports suggesting that nearly 9 000 officers face criminal charges ranging from assault and rape to theft and corruption.

He says the department does not tolerate criminal activity within its ranks.

"We have oversight structures like the Independent Police Investigative directorate, the Civilian secretariat for police and that is why we have emphasized to police management that they must not only try those who are on the wrong side but ensure that they have punitive measures to ensure that it will send a message that crime within the SAPS will not be tolerated" Mnisi said.
