The four police officers charged with beating a man to death in Katlehong in March last year, are due to go on trial from Monday.
They are also accused of assaulting two other people who were in police custody in March 2019.
Their trial in the Johannesburg High Court is set to run until 23 October 2020.
It is alleged that the police arrested a suspected drunk driver and other two people, who were also accused of interfering with police in the execution of their duties.
“There are also allegations that the assault continued and police officers kicked, beaten and even poured water on the victim’s faces,” said IPID’s Ndileka Cola.
She said the police watchdog investigated the matter and prepared a comprehensive report to both SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority for criminal charges to be instituted against the accused.
Cola says the four police officers are currently out on bail of R5000 each.
