Two police officials – a former Warrant Officer and a police Sergeant – are in hot water after being arrested for separate alleged criminal activities.
In the first incident, police spokesperson Lt Col Siphokazi Mawisa, said members attached to the anti-corruption unit arrested the now-former Warrant Officer on Tuesday in Makhanda.
She said according to the investigation, it’s alleged the 58-year-old stole drugs with an estimated street value of more than R200,000.
Lt Col Mawisa said the drugs were found in an abandoned area in Makhanda.
She said it was indicated that the drugs were booked in the local police station’s register for disposal and were stolen before they were disposed of.
“The suspect was arrested and warned to appear in the magistrate’s court on 14 January 2025,” Mawisa said.
She said in an unrelated incident, a police Sergeant is among ten suspects who were arrested for fraud in Sterkspruit on Wednesday and were due to appear in court on Thursday.
“The members attached to the anti-corruption and Public Order Police units in Maletswai, formerly Aliwal North, embarked on an operation and arrested the Sergeant who is allegedly involved in a fraud case that occurred at one of the filling stations in Sterkspruit.”
Police say the Sergeant allegedly conspired with cashiers and petrol attendants at the filling station and would allegedly get cash back after using the SAPS fleet petrol card.
Lt Col Mawisa said that the implicated cashiers and petrol attendants were also arrested.
