Calm returned outside former president Jacob Zuma’s homestead in Kwa Zulu Natal following a dramatic twist of events on Saturday when the Constitutional Court agreed to hear an application for a rescission of the contempt of court ruling against him.
The former statesman was sentenced to 15 months in jail by the highest court in the land last week.
Zuma supporters and allies descended on his homestead at Nkandla in the days following the ruling, raising concerns of possible unrest in the province.
In his application, he raised concerns about the Covid-19 crisis and his ailing health as a last-ditch plea to avoid serving time.
The ConCourt will hear Zuma’s application on 12 July.
Meanwhile, Zuma has also approached the Pietermaritzburg High Court to prevent his arrest.
He was due to hand himself over at the Westville Correctional Facility on Sunday, failing which police had three days to arrest him.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation said on Twitter that the former president would address the nation at 18:00 on Sunday.
