Coligny sunflower murder accused found guilty

Two farm workers accused of killing a teenager in Coligny over stolen sunflower heads were found guilty in the North West High Court in Mahikeng on Wednesday.

Judge Ronnie Hendricks convicted Pieter Doorewaard, 27, and Phillip Schutte, 34, of murder, kidnapping, intimidation, theft, and pointing of a firearm.

The State charged that the pair killed 16-year-old, Matlhomola Mosweu, last April by pushing him out of a moving van after they allegedly caught him stealing from their employer's sunflower field.

The two had maintained that he had jumped from the moving vehicle, but the sole eyewitness to the incident, Bonakele Pakisi, testified that Mosweu had been pushed.

The case was postponed to Thursday and the two men remain in custody pending sentencing.
