Cocaine stolen from Hawks safe in Port Shepstone

Police have appointed a team of detectives and Forensic Services to investigate a burglary at the Hawks offices in Port Shepstone where drugs worth R200 000 were stolen.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomtandazo Mbambo says the break-in is alleged to have happened between the 5th and the 8th of November.

She says the suspects gained entry into the building by forcing open the windows.

One of the safes in the office, which were used to store exhibits, was tampered with.

Brigadier Mbambo says the suspects stole 541kg of cocaine and ransacked the office where other safes were kept.

She says the Deputy National Head of police Luitenant General Tebello Mosikili has been tasked to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances of the theft.

No arrests have been made.
