The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that a civilian was shot during a mob justice incident in Mpumalanga last weekend.
An SANDF member was also stabbed with a screwdriver during the incident.
SANDF spokesperson Captain Jaco Theunissen said their members accompanied the South African Police Service (SAPS) to disperse the community who were meting out mob justice to a suspect at a local village.
He said on arrival at the scene, the law enforcers were attacked by community members who then stabbed a soldier.
Captain Theunissen said during the incident an armed civilian jumped out of his car and was subsequently shot dead.
Police are investigating the incident.
