Childline welcomes hefty sentence for child pornographer

Childline has welcomed the sentence handed down to a former Westville police officer, found guilty of possession and distribution of child pornography.

Andre Botha has been sent to jail for an effective 15 years.

A Free State court sentenced him on Wednesday to a total of 45 years after he was convicted on 7 charges.

Some of the sentences will run concurrently.

This is one of the harshest punishments meted out by a South African court, for this kind of crime.

Investigators found a vast collection of child-porn on Botha's computer hard drive, before his arrest in 2011.

Childline spokesperson Linda Naido says they hope that this will serve as a warning to others who abuse children.
