A six-year-old boy who filmed his grandfather allegedly assaulting his grandmother to death has been left traumatised after being locked in a cupboard during the ordeal.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, Lumka Mahanjana says 52-year-old John Nkgudi from the Tsakane township in Ekurhuleni, arrived home drunk in the middle of the night on the 28th of January 2023.
She says Nkgudi's 51-year-old wife Tinny was in the room with their six-year-old grandson when an argument broke out between the couple.
It is alleged that he went outside and came back with a stick, shovel and an axe that he used to assault his wife, in the presence of the child.
Mahanjana said when Nkgudi realised that his grandson was filming the assault on a cellphone, he grabbed the phone, and assaulted the child with a shovel, before locking him inside the cupboard.
She says by this time his wife had fled to the bathroom where she died from her injuries.
Mahanjana says the following day when Nkgudi's adult daughter arrived home from work, she became suspicious when she could not open the door.
She says the daughter broke into the house where she discovered her injured child in the cupboard as well as the body of her mother.
Nkgudi was arrested at a shack in Vukuzenzele two days later and took the police to where he hid his bloodstained clothes.
The matter was postponed for transfer to a regional court on the 19th of April 2023.
Meanwhile, in the same Magistrates Court, a 29-year-old man accused of killing his girlfriend was remanded in custody until the 19th of April.
Mahanjana says Kagiso Thobela and his 32-year-old girlfriend went drinking at a local tavern in Tsakani on the 12th of March when they too argued upon their arrival home.
She says the girlfriend ran into her ill father's bedroom, but Thobela allegedly followed her dragged her into another room and assaulted her.
Mahanjana says when he realised the woman was not moving he called his friend to confess.
She says Thobela drank pills and hanged himself on the roof.
His friend who rushed to the scene found the deceased in a pool of blood and untied the accused who was still breathing.
He was arrested on the scene.
