The case against Springbok rugby player, Elton Jantjies, for allegedly acting in an unruly manner on a flight from Turkey, has been provisionally withdrawn at the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Jantjies was charged with malicious injury to property (MITP) and Contravention of the Aviation Act.
Spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said the matter was provisionally withdrawn after Jantjies made representations to the Senior Public Prosecutor at Kempton Park.
This was “pending confirmation of payment for damages caused to the plane, as per undertaking from Jantjies,” she said.
“The prosecution will continue to engage with the complainant (Emirates Airline) to ensure that the accused delivers on his undertaking.”
Jantjies was arrested when the plane landed at OR Tambo International Airport, following complaints from the flight crew members about a passenger in business class that was swearing at passengers and crew members.
The player broke a television screen and bulb, and cut his hand after breaking a glass when ordered to return to his seat in the business class area.
