The civil rights organisation AfriForum and trade union Solidarity laid criminal charges of defamation, conspiracy to incite violence and assault by means of threats, against EFF leader Julius Malema at the Lyttelton police station in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Solidarity says its been approached by more than 1-thousand police officers who expressed their concern about threatening statements Malema made recently against members of the South African Police Service.
Afriforum’s Ernst Roets stated that if the police do not deal with this matter sufficiently seriously, Malema will see it as confirmation that he is indeed above the law.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has already gone on record as saying he believed Malema crossed the line with his threats against the police.
Roets said AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit will continue monitoring the matter to ensure that justice is done.
He said if Malema is not prosecuted by the National Prosecution Authority, the Private Prosecution Unit will prosecute him privately.
Meanwhile: The DA has weighed in on Malema’s comments, made on the back of the Brackenfell school saga, by urging Minister Cele to charge the EFF leader.
The DA says the Minister’s condemnation of Malema’s comments will ring hollow if not followed by decisive action.
