Police Minister Bheki Cele says three people of interest have been taken in for questioning in connection with the killing of a German tourist near the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga.
Cele and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola visited the scene of the crime on Numbi Road on Wednesday.
According to the police report, four German tourists were travelling Numbi Gate at Mdluli Safari lodge, when they were stopped by three armed suspects who instructed the tourists to open the doors of their vehicle.
The driver reportedly locked the doors to their car which led to one of the suspects firing several shots through the window.
The driver died on the scene before the suspects sped off in their vehicle.
Cele told the media that the police have already identified three people of interest.
"As we stand here, we have three people of interest. They are not arrested, they are people of interest though they are in the hands of the police. We are working to find out how far have we gone with that. So, we believe we that we will be able to crack the case very very soon since the police have done the job and they believe they are not very far in cracking the case," says Cele.
Cele says police are investigating eleven other robberies involving tourists in the area.
"It is a sad situation, it does look like we have a problem here. I have been given about eleven cases of the robbery of national and foreign tourists," he said.
