Cape Town company appointed to manufacture vaccines for the continent

Biovac, a partnership between the South African government and private sector, has been appointed to manufacture the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for distribution within the African Union

The company is based in Cape Town.

BioVac is the first-ever company to produce the vaccine within the African continent.

The company will obtain drugs substance from companies in Europe and the manufacturing of full doses will commence next year.

Its annual COVID-19 vaccine production is expected to exceed 100 million annually.

The doses are set to be distributed among the 55 members of the African Union member states.
