The Road Traffic Management Corporation has called on motorists to “resist the temptation to break the rules of the road” as they return home from the Easter holidays and religious pilgrimages.
RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said traffic volumes on national roads are expected to reach a peak on Monday.
He said law enforcement officers will continue to closely monitor traffic in an effort to deal with lawlessness and reduce the number of crashes.
“A total of 75 192 vehicles have been stopped and checked at various check points since the start of the holiday period and 699 motorists have been arrested for various offences including drunken driving, excessive speeding, and producing false driving documentation.”
Zwane said the highest speed was recorded in Lyttleton, Gauteng where a motorist was nabbed while driving at 198km and hour in a 120km zone.
“Travelers are reminded to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on their return trips, wear safety belts and be on the lookout for pedestrians,” he said.
