Business 'as usual' on Friday - BASA

The Banking Association of South Africa says it will be business as usual at banks on Friday.

BASA said today that it was heading to the courts on Wednesday for an interdict to stop a planned country-wide strike by members of the banking union, Sasbo.

In a statement, BASA said that Business Unity South Africa is also seeking to stop the strike by the Cosatu affiliate, on the basis that the notice sent to the National Economic Development and Labour Council, under which Sasbo is planning to act, may not have met all the requirements for the strike to be legally protected.

The Banking Association says its members will also try to keep any disruptions to a minimum.

BASA claimed the cutting of staff at banks was a global phenomenon brought on by economic pressures, digital innovation and changes in the way customers use financial services.

Members of South African Society of Bank Officials, the country's biggest financial union -- say they'll be embarking on a national strike on Friday, against job losses in the sector.

Secretary-general Joe Kokela says the strike action comes as employers close branches across the country due to digitisation, where clients are encouraged to use mobile banking instead of visiting their local branch.

The Cosatu-affiliated union is planning five marches throughout the country in Johannesburg, Durban. Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
