Free State police said seven bodies were discovered at Kopanong Mine near Kroonstad.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said the grim discovery was made at the 50th level station underground at the mine in Vierfontein on Friday.
He said the deceased were not mine employees and that their identities, age, gender, and country of origin are still unknown.
Makhele said the bodies were brought to the surface by the company's rescue team and handed over to authorities in Kroonstad.
Post mortems will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
