Black weekend on South Africa's roads

Nineteen people were killed, and 28 were injured in road accidents reported by various officials across the country on Saturday.

The most deadly accident took place on the road between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp and claimed four lives.

The Western Cape community safety department's chief traffic director, Kenny Africa says a one-year-old child was amongst six people killed in the province over the weekend.

He says the driver of the car the child was travelling in, fell asleep at the wheel as the family was on route from Aberdeen to Beaufort West. The car overturned.

On Friday, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said more than 765 people had been killed on SA roads so far this month.

Spokesperson, Ashref Ismail said the RTMC had hoped to reduce the number of road casualties this year by 25 percent, but said all indications were that this target would not be met.
