Bhisho Education Department shows way forward for temporary teachers

Eastern Cape Education superintendent-general, Modidima Mannya, says the Department differs substantially with teachers union Sadtu on the reappointment of temporary teachers.

Speaking in East London today, Mannya said Sadtu wants the Department to reinstate all 4-thousand-524 temporary teachers whose contracts were not renewed last year, while the Department is of the view that the number of net vacant substantive posts in terms of 2012 post establishment is 3-thousand-804.

In a lengthy and detailed statement, which is attached, Mannya said that among the decisions taken at a recent departmental executive management committee meeting was that the 2012 post establishment would be implemented.

He said this includes a 30 day notice to all teachers who are deemed in excess to move to other schools, while the appointment of one thousand 836 temporary educators must be completed to deal with delays in the implementation of the current plan.

Meanwhile, the shortage of teachers in some schools in Port Elizabeth's northern areas has already led to marches by angry parents and school governing bodies to the regional offices of the Department of Education.

Last week Mannya met leaners, teachers and parents at the Sanctor High School following a protest over the shortage of teachers.

Algoa FM News has been informed that the Cedarberg Primary School in Booysens Park will be closed indefinitely from Wednesday in protest against the teacher shortages.

A march is also being planned by parents and learners to the education department.
