BCM records two drowning incidents, one person still missing

Buffalo City Metro sea rescue teams have rescued one person and said on Sunday morning that the search was still on for another person who was missing in the water at Eastern Beach.

BCM spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said there was also a mass rescue of five people on Saturday at the same beach.

There were no incidents reported on other beaches, he said on Sunday.

“The metro is issuing warning to beachgoers to be vigilant as beaches are getting crowded with the combination of good weather and holidays kicking in.”

Ngwenya said that officials have noted with concern that the dominant factor in the incidents of drownings is alcohol consumption.

He’s also called on people to always swim on beach patrolled areas designated for lifeguards supervision.

“The city has increased its lifeguards’ compliment to beef up its contingent in order to manage drowning incidents.

“A total of 43 lifeguards will be operational during the 2023 summer season with 25 being seasonal and 18 full time.

Safety and security officers have been deployed on foot, as well as horses, cars with helicopter patrols and CCTV cameras looking over strategic points including the CBD area.
