Bathabile Dlamini perjury trial gets underway in Joburg court

The perjury trial of the former Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, is set to begin in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

This, after the Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, decided to prosecute Dlamini for lying under oath.

“The charges relate to her testimony during an inquiry established by the Constitutional Court into her role in the 2017 social grants crisis,” said NPA Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane.

She said in September 2018, the Constitutional Court found that Dlamini “not only failed in her duties as a minister, but also failed to disclose information to the inquiry for fear of being held liable for the 2017 crisis.”

The former Minister Dlamini made her first appearance on 21 September 2021 and the matter was postponed to 01 October for disclosure of the contents of the docket to her legal team.

“She is expected to state her plea before the state calls its first witness,” she said.
