The Beer Association of South Africa says it is extremely concerned over rumors that there will be a fourth alcohol ban following Friday's announcement of a new variant of Covid-19.
BASA says the industry has not been consulted regarding a new ban and until such time it will continue to trade as per the license conditions.
It says members will continue with safety measures implemented at the start of Covid-19 last year, which include ensuring proper sanitising, wearing of masks, social distancing, and encouraging all South Africans to get vaccinated.
BASA says the previous alcohol bans had a devastating impact on the industry, with 14.7% of projected sales volumes for 2020/21 being lost.
It says R42.2 billion was lost in retail sales and there was a R60.7 billion loss to the GDP.
