A Bangladeshi national was jailed for 25 years in jail for stabbing his wife to death in front of one of their minor children in 2021.
The National Prosecuting Authority said 41-year-old Abdul Salam was sentenced in the High Court on Thursday for the murder of Miche Samuels.
Spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said the judge held that gender-based violence and femicide continued despite convictions and sentences and therefore a long-term sentences was appropriate.
He said during the trial the court heard that the couple’s marriage was characterised by arguments which led to violence.
Samuels was killed in March 2021, after the couple had visited the Wynberg Police Station to seek counselling on “their disputes”.
The Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, welcomed the sentence and committed the NPA to continuing the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
