Auctioneer arrested for spreading foot and mouth disease

Limpopo police will be investigating whether more people were involved in the transporting of animals infected with foot and mouth disease in contravention of a province-wide ban.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said that an auctioneer, Sors Snyman, appeared in court on Monday for allegedly moving infected animals from one auction to another.

He was charged with the contravention of the Animal Diseases Act.

Department spokesperson Reggie Ngcobo said the case against Snyman was postponed to 23 March for further investigation.

He was released on bail of R10 000 with strict conditions.

Ngcobo said that the police believe there are other people who also have a case to answer.

"This is not the end of the investigation," he said.

Meanwhile, Ngcobo said that the ban on the movement of cloven-hoofed animals in Limpopo remains in place.

He said, for now, the outbreak is confined to that province.
