Arms deal inquiry to resume on Jan 20

The Seriti Commission of Inquiry into the country's multi-billion rands arms deal will resume on the 20th of this month.

Commission spokesperson, William Baloyi, says they're expecting to run through to May.

He says several former cabinet ministers, including former president Thabo Mbeki, are expected to give evidence to the Commission during this phase.

Baloyi told Algoa FM News that this is a continuation of the phase of the Commission's work that was meant to be completed last year.

"Although it was anticipated that the first phase would be concluded at the end of the year [2013], this has not happened due
to a variety of reasons," he said in a statement.

"This phase will therefore be carried over to the new year and in turn this has necessitated that the schedule of witnesses and timetable be revised."

From January 20 to February 21, officials from the department of trade and industry were expected to testify.

They included former trade and industry minister Alec Erwin and the department's current director general Lionel October.

From February 24 to March 20, witnesses from Armscor would testify.

From late March to early April, former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota and former deputy defence minister Ronnie Kasrils would testify along with others from the department.

From April 9 until the end of the month, National Treasury officials would testify. This would include former director general Maria Ramos and her husband, former finance minister and current Minister of Planning Trevor Manuel.

The government's former chief negotiator in the arms deal Jayendra Naidoo would testify from May 5 to 9, while former president Thabo Mbeki is expected to testify from the May 12 to May 16.
