Another tragedy befalls a South African school.

Upington police said that a 14-year-old female learner died after being stabbed by a 16-year-old female classmate.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba, said the incident occurred at the Rosendal Intermediate School early on Wednesday morning.

He said the victim was taken to hospital by ambulance but the Grade 8 learner died on the way.

Ramatseba said the teenage suspect was "referred" to a probation's officer.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
