The body of a 34-year-old suspect, who was arrested for the alleged rape of an elderly woman in Kestell in the eastern Free State, was found hanging in police cells on Friday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says members at the local police station found the man's body during their routine hourly visits.
He says an inquest docket was opened and the matter was also reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
Makhele says no foul play is suspected at this stage.
He says the man was arrested after he allegedly robbed and raped a 92-year old woman in her house after gaining entry through a window on New Year's Eve.
