Alleged killer of Liezel de Jager in court after cold case defrosts

A man believed to be the husband of slain Reverend Liezel de Jager is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday.

De Jager was strangled to death at her home in Amanzimtoti on 13 October 2021.

From the onset of the investigation, it was widely suspected that the husband was involved in the murder and even more so when he went missing 10 days later.

Willem de Jager was found four days later in a sugarcane plantation where he had reportedly overdosed on medication.

For two years the case made no progress and was transferred to the Cold Case Unit under the command of Brigadier Bafana Gininda.

Within days an arrest was made in Bloemfontein.

Liezel was the minister of the NG Suidkus Church in Amanzimtoti.

According to her Facebook account, she went to school in Graaff Reinet in the Eastern Cape.
