Alleged hitman linked to Richards Bay Minerals' murders arrested

Police in Durban have arrested an alleged hitman involved in the murder of a man who was linked to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM).

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele says 40-year-old Omega Khulani Ngubane was arrested during an intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday.

She says he is accused of gunning down 48-year-old Judia Mbuyazi at a mall in Richards Bay in July 2020.

Colonel Mbele says a number of people linked to Richards Bay Minerals had been targeted and a special task team was established in June last year to specifically investigate these matters.

The accused will now be profiled to establish if he is linked to any of the other cases.

He will be back in court next week.

More arrests are imminent.

In May last year the General Manager of Richards Bay Minerals, 47-year-old Nico Swart died in a hail of bullets while driving in his car.

According to reports, more than 20 high calibre bullets were fired at his vehicle.

In 2016, another manager at RBM, Ronnie Nzimande was ambushed and killed by suspects with semi-automatic weapons.

Nzimande was involved in investigating charges against senior staff.
