An alleged hitman who police said was about to flee to Swaziland, is expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Constable Ntombizodwa Masuku.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said he was arrested on Sunday by members of a joint task police team following a tip-off.
He said the 30-year-old suspect was arrested in Malvern in Johannesburg and the police officer’s stolen service pistol was also recovered.
Nkwalase said Constable Masuku, who was stationed at Daveytone SAPS, was travelling to work with her husband on 23 June when gunmen in two mini-buses opened fire on their vehicle.
He said the husband, Velu Masuku, escaped unharmed while his wife was killed and her firearm stolen. He was arrested on the same day in connection with the murder and remains in custody.
Masuku will make his next court appearance on 18 July alongside the alleged hitman.
