Alleged drug mule nabbed at ORTIA while Mexicans appear in court for meth lab

Suspect nabbed in Groblersdal

An alleged drug mule nabbed at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) made his first appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Lloyd Ramovha says the 36-year-old Brazilian national, Risclif Tadue Ramos attempted to smuggle a consignment of 4 kg of cocaine into country.

He says Ramos had just landed in Johannesburg on a flight from Brazil on Friday when he was identified and searched at the landing bay.

Ramos, who did not check in any luggage, had the drugs concealed in a body wrap.

Captain Ramovha says when he was taken to the ORTIA police station an interpreter was sourced as he claimed to not understand English.

He says Ramos admitted to the interpreter that he did have drugs on him and he was taken into custody.

He will be back in court on the 30th of July to apply for bail.

Meanwhile, two Mexican Nationals and two South Africans appeared in the Groblersdal District court on Monday after police pounced on a farm where they uncovered a crystal meth operation worth R2 billion.

Gonzales Jorge (51), Gutierrez Lopes (43), Simphiwe Khumalo (35) and the owner of the farm, Frederick Botha (67) were remanded in custody where the case was postponed to the 1st of August.

On Monday the Hawks arrested a fifth suspect, also a Mexican National who is allegedly connected to the case.
