Alleged cash-in-transit robbery suspect shot dead by police

Eastern Cape police say they have shot and killed a 33-year-old wanted cash-in-transit robbery suspect at Ngcolosi village in Tsolo on Thursday.

Spokesperson to the provincial transport and community safety MEC, Makhaya Komisa, said the suspect allegedly started shooting at police first when a Tactical Response Team (TRT) arrived at a house the suspect was in.

He said police retaliated and fatally shot the suspect.

A second suspect, a 19-year-old man, was arrested and was due to appear in court on Friday.

An inquest docket was opened, and the matter is going to be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Makhaya said no member of the TRT was injured in the incident.

He said MEC Nqatha applauded the police “for showing the brazen criminals flames”.

The MEC added: “We are extremely delighted that our police always emerge victorious when they are attacked by these brazen criminals.

“These incidents are sending a strong message to the criminals that police will defend themselves when attacked.

“SAPS is ready, they must bring it on."

In a separate incident on Thursday, a 52-year-old woman was arrested in Ngqeleni in possession of two rifle magazines with ammunition.

She is  due to appear in the Ngqeleni magistrate's court soon on charges of contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
