Alberton crash driver in court

The driver of a truck that allegedly caused a multi-vehicle pile-up and killed four people on the N12 East near Alberton last week, is expected to apply for bail in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Isaac Moruding was arrested on October 15, after his truck ploughed into more than 40 vehicles in early morning traffic the previous day, killing four people and injuring 16 others.

Two people died at the scene, and two others later died in hospital.

During his first appearance, the court heard that he was a repeat offender.

He had been arrested for reckless and negligent driving in 1996, and a year later, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for the crime, but his jail term was suspended for four years.

In 1999, he was arrested and convicted of culpable homicide.

His conviction invoked the suspended sentence he had received in 1997 and he subsequently spent 18 months behind bars.
