Afriforum ropes in Barry Roux to assist in Coligny appeal

Prominent defence advocate Barry Roux will lead the appeal process of two Coligny men convicted of killing a teenager for stealing sunflowers.

Afriforum announced earlier this month that they would bring in their own defence to assist the 27-year-old Pieter Doorewaard and the 34-year-old Phillip Schutte in their appeal.

This after an Afrikaans newspaper claimed that the key witness for the State, Bonakele Pakisi admitted to lying under oath.

Doorewaard and Schutte were found guilty of killing Matlhomola Mosweu on April 20, 2017.

The convicted men claimed Mosweu jumped from a moving van, while they were taking him to a police station, the court rejected that version and accepted the testimony of Pakisi, who was the sole witness.

The men are expected to be sentenced on Monday and only then will Advocate Barry Roux will get involved for the appeal.
