Afriforum loses court bid on beach closures

File

The North Gauteng High Court on Wednesday dismissed Afriforum's application challenging the regulations used to close beaches in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route after the areas were declared Covid19 hotspots.

The regulation stipulates that all beaches in the Eastern Cape as well as on the Garden Route would be closed from 16 December to 3 January.

It also stipulated that all beaches in KwaZulu-Natal would be closed on 16, 25, 26 and 31 December, as well as from 1 to 3 January.

Afriforum's head of campaigns, Monique Taute, said while disappointed with the outcome of the case, they were still encouraging South Africans to visit their favourite holiday destinations and support local businesses.

"These businesses will most likely now suffer immense and in most cases irreparable damage due to the fact that most holidaymakers cancelled their vacation plans because the beaches are closed," Taute said.

On Tuesday, the Democratic Alliance also lost its bid in the Western Cape High Court challenging the closure of beaches on the Garden Route.
