The Presidency said that African leaders proposed a “path to peace” following visits to the Ukraine and Russia aimed at ending the 16-month long conflict.
“The proposal presented by African leaders on a mission to Ukraine and Russia has created a foundation for future engagements that will contribute to a road to peace and resolution to the devastating conflict,” according to a statement by the Presidency on Sunday.
According to SAnews.gov.za, Ramaphosa tabled the missions’ ten-points” that had been proposed to President Volodymyr Zelensky at a meeting on Friday.
Presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the African Heads of States and Government asserted several key elements that are vital in starting a path to peace.
“Some of the elements include the de-escalation of the conflict; release of the prisoners of war and children, adherence to the principle of the UN Charter on Sovereignty; ensuring that there is humanitarian support for those in need and post war reconstruction amongst others,” he said.
Magwenya said President Ramaphosa is encouraged by the warm reception that the delegation received from the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia and would reflect further on the “African Peace Mission” in his weekly newsletter on Monday.
The seven-country African Peace Mission included Senegal President, Macky Sall, the President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema and the President of the Comoros and African Union head, Azali Assoumani.
