Almost 50 children were injured, two critically, when a school bus overturned on the N3 highway between Hilton and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu Natal on Tuesday.
Private emergency services provider ER24 said in a statement that 48 children were injured.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said emergency services arrived on the scene and found a school bus lying on its side on the side of the road. Numerous children had already climbed out of the vehicle and were found walking around on the scene.
Local authorities had closed off the road while paramedics began assessing the patients, leading to heavy traffic congestion.
“Approximately 48 children were assessed by various services,” Meiring said. “Two children were found to be in a critical condition, while approximately 46 others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
“Paramedics immediately treated the patients and provided the seriously and critically injured with advanced life support interventions.”
Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.
Local authorities were on the scene to investigate the cause of the accident.
