1184 Killed in December road accidents

A total of 1184 people were killed in 987 road accidents nationwide from December 1 to 30, the Road Traffic Management
Corporation (RTMC) said on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal had the most recorded accidents, 205, followed by Gauteng with 156 and the Eastern Cape with 136.

The figures, released on Tuesday, were based on road fatalities
reported by the police.

The route with the most recorded fatalities, 14, for December was the N12 between Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad, North West. This was followed by nine deaths on the N11 between Middelburg and Groblersdal in Limpopo, and seven deaths on the N1 between Laingsburg and Cape Town in the Western Cape.

RTMC spokeswoman Thato Mosena said many accidents occurred on secondary routes which motorists travelled on to avoid toll fees and traffic officers.

During December 986 people were arrested nationwide for drinking
and driving and inconsiderate and/or reckless driving. About 15 percent of these drivers were women.

Acting Transport Minister Ben Martins said almost all the accidents were due to reckless, disrespectful and anti-social conduct by drivers.
