‘Drunk’ cop in court

File

South African police management said it was “appalled” by the conduct of an apparently drunk policeman in full uniform trying to inspect the damage he caused to an official vehicle he was not authorised to drive.

In a statement, SAPS said the Constable, who is stationed at Wolmaranstad was filmed on Saturday struggling to stand on his feet following the collision with a fence in Tswelelang Location in the town.

“Subsequent to the incident, a case of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and/or negligent driving was opened for investigation while the Constable was detained,” said Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone.

He said the policeman was also not authorised to drive the police vehicle and will face this additional charge on top of the drunk driving charge.

The Constable was released on bail of R500 on Saturday and was due back in court on Monday.

North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena expressed his disapproval of the member's conduct, saying SAPS members are obliged at all times to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
