Lemons, which will usually leave a grimace on one's face are putting a smile on the faces of citrus producers and Eastern Cape farmers in particular.
The Citrus Growers Association of South Africa says the recent signing of a revised citrus protocol with China, will be critical for the growth of this market.
CEO, Justin Chadwick, says lemon production, more than half of which comes from the Eastern Cape, is expected to expand by 175 000 metric tons by 2024.
He says the finalisation of the revised protocol means China will now become a critical new market for this growth and will realize R325 million in new export revenue and secure 800 jobs in the industry.
