The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued a level 6 warning for damaging winds and waves over the next 24 hours affecting the coastal region from Plettenberg Bay to East London.

Wind gusts between 100-120km/hour can be expected, leading to challenging driving conditions.

A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says road users and motorists in particular are urged to be extra cautious or avoid being on the road where possible as the warning issued by SAWS can have a severe impact, potentially toppling over vehicles or cause significant damage to properties and infrastructure.

The warning is also for the Kouga, Ndlambe and Ngqushwa Local municipalities.

SAWS says waves could also damage coastal infrastructure, while vessels are at risk of capsizing or breaking mooring lines.

Inland, similar conditions are expected, although the alert level is downgraded to a yellow level two.
