Wild weather warnings again issued for the weekend

Just a week after a storm surge wreaked havoc along the coastline of South Africa, another weekend of severe weather has been predicted.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) says a cut-off low-pressure system is expected to develop along the west coast of South Africa from Saturday.

According to SAWS cut-off lows are notorious for causing widespread severe weather such as flooding, heavy rainfall, and severe thunderstorms.

From Sunday onwards, widespread showers and thundershowers can be expected.

The Western Cape, Northern Cape, and western areas of the Eastern Cape may experience severe thunderstorms where bursts of intense rainfall may cause flash flooding.

Strong to gale-force winds and very rough seas of 4,0 to 6,0 m are expected along the coastal areas, particularly along the Western and Eastern Cape coast on Sunday and Monday.

It will also be very windy over the central and eastern interior of the country from Sunday into Monday, and the combination of the warmer and windy weather could increase the risk of veld fires in open areas.

On Friday, the local weather office issued an advisory to the public, marine users and small-stock farmers to expect disruptive rain, damaging waves, winds and severe storms with snow and cold temperatures possible.

Meanwhile, the annual Lions to Coast mountain Bike race set to take place in the Garden Route this weekend has been cancelled.

The 100km race starting from Uniondale to Knysna via the Prince Alfred Pass cannot proceed due to adverse weather conditions expected this weekend.

George Municipality says race organisers were informed of the decision last night but deemed it necessary due to safety concerns.
