Disaster teams are on stand-by as severe storms are heading to parts of northern KwaZulu Natal.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a level 6 warning, indicating a high probability of flooding as significant rainfall exceeding 100 mm is expected.

It says winds of up to 110km/hour can be expected along the coast between Richards Bay and Kosi Bay while waves of 4-6 meters can be expected

This is a result of tropical storm Filipo intensifying in the Mozambique Channel.

Areas placed on high alert include uMhlathuze, Mtubatuba, Big Five Hlabisa, Nongoma, Jozini, uPhongolo and Umhlabuyalingana local municipalities.

SAWS says this rain will in all likelihood flood roads, bridges and settlements, not to mention the impact it would have on traffic and the disruption of essential services.

Motorists living in the affected areas are urged not to drive during the storms.

Communities have also been advised to seek shelter, if needed, at any public facility such as community halls.

The disaster teams are prepared to evacuate residents if needed.
